THE BRIEF

Travis Bernhardt—an award winning actor and magician—needed a poster, handbill, and merch for ‘Unscriptured,’ an improvisational theatre show about a religion made up on the spot.

THE SOLUTION

The linear, graphic style of the illustration was inspired by the illuminated manuscripts and stained glass portraits of saints from the Middle Ages, but with an added quirky, stylized strangeness. The illustration depicts Travis as a robed figure grasping a sceptre in the form of a question mark, referencing the made up religion suggested by show attendees. While the illustration unmistakably references religious imagery, the fluorescent ink hints that this isn’t your grandma’s church service! The poster and handbill are accompanied by t-shirts along with some extra cheeky prayer candles and ‘holy water.’
